Is antifreeze the same as coolant?
Although they are similar products, coolant is not technically the same as antifreeze. Antifreeze is a concentrated product designed to be mixed with water (sometimes known as blue antifreeze), while coolant is a pre-mixed product which is ready to be used as it comes. It is sometimes known as red antifreeze.
Ready-mixed antifreeze is the easiest solution, as it’s able to be poured straight into your cooling system. Concentrated antifreeze will require mixing with water; however, it will provide you with more fills per bottle and be more cost-effective in the long run.
Where does antifreeze go?
When it comes to topping up your antifreeze or coolant, you will usually do so in your vehicle’s cooling reservoir. However, it’s important to note that some older models don’t have a cooling reservoir. In this case, it is usually recommended that the coolant or antifreeze is added to the radiator, although you should always check your vehicle manual before doing so.
Make sure you check your car antifreeze levels regularly and keep them to the marked level. Usually, it is recommended to complete a coolant or antifreeze change every two years or 30,000 miles, but as with most car parts and fluids, it’s best to check your manufacturer’s recommendation. The good news is that it’s easy to complete an antifreeze or coolant change yourself, saving you a trip to the garage.
