What are glow plugs and what do they do?
A glow plug set works for diesel engines much like spark plugs work for petrol engines. Unlike petrol engines, however, diesel engines rely solely on compressed air to ignite the fuel in the diesel mixture. On cold starts, or when the air around the engine is at a low, glow plugs increase the compressed air’s temperature helping cause ignition.
How long do glow plugs last?
Over time your glow plugs become covered in carbon, which can cause your glow plug to overheat and wear out eventually. Thankfully, glow plugs for diesel cars tend to have good longevity and usually only need changing every 100,000 miles or so.
Why am I seeing the glow plug warning light?
If the glow plug warning light is flashing while you’re driving, it may mean that your glow plugs require changing due to their age. However, if your engine has trouble starting, is misfiring, or sounds rough when idling it may be a sign to replace your glow plugs early. If you see this flashing light, other bad glow plug symptoms to keep an eye out for include decreased fuel efficiency and black smoke when driving.
