Over time your glow plugs become covered in carbon, this can cause your glow plug to overheat and wear out over time.
If your glow plug warning light has come on, it may also mean that your glow plugs require changing. Thankfully, glow plugs have good longevity and usually only need changing every 100,000 miles or so. However, if your engine has trouble starting, is misfiring or sounds rough when idling it may be a sign to replace your glow plugs early.
