As a friction component, it’s important to check the condition of your brake pads regularly. The heat and level of friction generated will rub away the abrasive surface of the pad and if you feel reduced stopping power or squeaking when braking, it may be time to replace your pads.

Therefore, it is important to invest in a good set of brake pads. More expensive brake pads will be made from stronger, more resistant materials such as ceramic. These pads will last for longer and be less prone to issues such as brake fade.

Use our number plate lookup to ensure you purchase the correct replacement pads for your car and choose from our range of trusted Quinton Hazell, and Bosch brake pads.

How long do brake pads last?

Brake pads usually last between 30,000 and 70,000 miles but wear will depend greatly on your mileage, driving style and the types of roads you drive on. Your brake pads and brake discs will be checked during your MOT, so you should get a good idea of their wear once a year.

Some cars also have brake pad wear indicators. These devices alert the driver when a brake pad has reached its wear limit and come in two forms, Acoustic and Electronic. Acoustic brake wear indicators are mechanical devices that, once the pad is worn, will press against a scratch plate, generating an unpleasant screeching sound when the brakes are applied.

Electronic wear indicators will trigger when a warning contact meets the sensor, completing a circuit. A warning light will display on the dashboard letting you know the brake pad has reached its limit and requires replacing.
