Brake Pads

Keep safe on the road and invest in a new pair of brake pads from My Motor World today. Brake pads are a vital safety component of your car. When braking, brake pads are pressed against a brake disc to generate friction and cause your car to slow down. A worn set of brake pads will have a smoother surface, reducing friction and increasing stopping distances, making your car more dangerous.

How long do brake pads last

A brake pad should last between 30,000 and 70,000 miles but wear will depend greatly on your mileage, driving style and the types of roads you drive on. Your brake pads will be checked during your MOT, so you should get a good idea of their wear once a year.

Signs of worn brake pads

The heat and level of friction generated will rub away the abrasive surface of the pad. If you feel reduced stopping power or squeaking when braking, it may be time to replace your pads. Other signs of wear include squeaking noises from your brakes, vibration while braking, and your car taking longer to stop.

Some cars also have brake pad wear indicators. These devices alert the driver when a brake pad has reached its wear limit and come in two forms, acoustic and electronic. Acoustic brake wear indicators are mechanical devices that, once the pad is worn, will press against a scratch plate, generating an unpleasant screeching sound when the brakes are applied.

Electronic wear indicators will trigger when a warning contact meets the sensor, completing a circuit. A brake pad warning light will display on the dashboard letting you know the brake pad has reached its limit and requires changing.

How to check your brake pads

As a friction component, it’s important to check the condition of your car brake pads regularly. The good news is that this is usually easy enough to do yourself. On many cars brake pads can be seen through the holes in the wheel, so you can use this viewing point to check the thickness of the pad. If it is anything less than 3mm, it will need replacing.
