Spark Plugs

Shop the spark plug collection at My Motor World today. Your engine needs 3 main elements to operate — ignition, fuel, and air. Spark plugs are responsible for the first factor in this equation. Has your engine lost its spark? Over time, your spark plugs can become covered in carbon, oil, and fuel, which leads to them reducing in efficiency. If your engine is knocking, slow to accelerate, or regularly misfires, then it may be time to invest in a new spark plug set.

What do spark plugs do?

Your spark plugs channel an electrical current causing a spark that ignites the compressed air and fuel in the combustion chamber. Without spark plugs, your car cannot operate, so it’s vital to replace these essential car components when necessary.

Do diesel cars have spark plugs?

No, diesel cars do not have spark plugs. Diesel engines operate differently from gasoline engines in how they ignite the fuel-air mixture, and instead use glow plugs and compression ignition.

How long do spark plugs last?

Usually, it’s recommended to replace a car spark plug every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, but longer-life plugs tipped in iridium or platinum can last even longer. If you’ve just bought a second-hand car, it may be a good idea to change your spark plugs to ensure you have peace of mind. As they’re a low-cost part that’s easy to replace, it’s well worth doing.

How to change spark plugs

The good news is that changing spark plugs is a relatively easy job you should be able to do by yourself. Start by removing the old spark plugs with a socket and ratchet. Next, use a gap gauge to check the gap of the new spark plugs. Adjust as necessary according to your vehicle's specifications. Once this is done you can install the new spark plugs by carefully threading them by hand into the spark plug hole and tightening them with the socket and rachet. Finally, reconnect the spark plug wires and test the engine.
