The ignition distributor plays an important role in starting your car’s engine. Essentially, the distributor is a part of the ignition system that transfers an electrical charge from the battery to the spark plugs in order to ignite the fuel inside the engine chamber. As the engine has multiple cylinders, more than one spark is required — and these must reach the spark plugs at exactly the right time, and in the right sequence. This is where the distributor comes in.

Made up of several smaller parts working in unison — including the rotor arm, contact points, and distributor cap — the distributor takes the charge amplified by the ignition coil, and releases it to each spark plug at just the right moment. This keeps the car engine running smoothly.

Ignition distributors are more commonly found on older cars, particularly those produced before the mid-00s. Newer vehicles use coil packs and computer-controlled ignition modules instead.

Just like any car part, the distributor will wear out over time, and can be susceptible to water damage. If you notice that the engine is misfiring or making unusual noises, it could be a sign that it’s time for a new distributor.
