Also known as a capacitor, the ignition condenser is a part of the system which starts your engine. More commonly found on cars produced before 1980, the condenser reduces voltage spikes to prevent a surge from damaging the other parts in the system — especially the contact points. Newer vehicles tend to use diodes to control the voltage, meaning a condenser is not required.
If your car’s condenser is failing, you might notice that the ignition is starting to spark. An early warning sign that the condenser could be faulty is static in your car’s radio transmission. If you pick up on these symptoms, it’s important to fit a condenser replacement promptly, before a voltage surge can damage the other ignition parts.
