The ignition control module is the computer at the heart of your car’s starting system. This small black controls the ignition timing, ensuring that the sparks needed to ignite the fuel in the engine are generated at exactly the right moment. It works by receiving signals from various sensors in the vehicle, including the crankshaft position sensor, to work out the position and rotational speed of the engine. It then uses this data to calculate the optimum time to generate a spark via the ignition coil and leads.
In older cars, the ignition module works alongside a distributor and contact breaker points. In modern vehicles, however, the control module takes on the functionality of the contact breaker.
