How to pick the right bulb.

The most important factor in choosing a bulb is the fitment type. This can usually be found on the base of your outgoing lightbulb and will be identified by an H number e.g. H7. Once you’ve found the bulbs that fit your car, you’ll need to choose the type of bulb. These are usually separated into 3 categories, Halogen, Xenon & LED. Halogen light bulbs have been around for much longer and are widely used providing bright light for a lower cost than the other two. You’ll be familiar with Halogen bulbs for the yellow, warmer beam and they will usually last for around 2000 working hours.

The range of halogen bulbs has also increased in recent years, with manufacturers creating brighter bulbs with whiter colours. When buying the bulb this will be the K number on the front e.g. 5000k. This essentially refers to the “temperature of the light”, with lower numbers referring to a warmer, yellow light and higher numbers a cooler, blue light,

Xenon lightbulbs often last much longer than Halogen bulbs, around 10 000 in-use hours, but can deteriorate over time, producing less light than when first bought. They are usually more expensive and have a brighter, whiter light. Unfortunately, Xenon HID lights are only road legal for cars that originally had them fit by the manufacturer.

LED bulbs are becoming more and more popular as their improved energy efficiency means they last for longer than xenon bulbs (around 30 000 hours) whilst producing a similar bright white beam. Like Xenon bulbs, however, it’s illegal to fit LED bulbs to your vehicle unless your car’s manufacturer initially fitted them.
